The Task
Buildings and manufacturing plants account for roughly two-thirds of U.S. CO2 emissions and are ripe for emissions reduction improvements — but the perceived risk can hold organizations back from taking steps to decarbonize. After launching the Better Climate Challenge in 2012, which invited public and private organizations nationwide to commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by 50% in 10 years, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Initiative sought an engaging, visual way to de-risk decarbonization, showcase successful pathways, and encourage others to join the Better Climate Challenge.
The Idea
C+C worked with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to create the Better Climate Challenge Road Show — a reality-style series highlighting the work of industry leaders as they cut greenhouse gas emissions in their buildings and manufacturing plants. For Season One, released in June 2023, the Road Show headed to Nashville, TN, to highlight three industrial manufacturers who are partners in DOE’s Better Climate Challenge: Nissan, Chemours and Whirlpool. For Season Two, released in December 2023, DOE energy experts headed to Cleveland to see the decarbonization efforts of Better Climate Challenge partners, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland-Cliffs and the City of Cleveland.
The Outcome
C+C filmed three episodes per season, as well as bonus workforce development mini episodes for Season One, to showcase the decarbonization work of these companies. C+C worked closely with energy and technical experts to ensure content was informative yet approachable. Both seasons of the series were launched alongside a digital marketing campaign and nationwide media relations. As of July 2024, the series has received approximately 1.3 million video views, more than 100 social media mentions, and more than 15 pieces of national and trade media coverage.
